August 1-2nd
Only 3 openings left! Cost: $285 plus lab and material fees This is a two day workshop on how to produce
the traditional style turned wood ornament consisting of a hollow globe with decorative
top finial and a matching long ice sickle bottom. The first half day consists of an
introduction to the techniques for hollowing the globe using a reverse lathe rotation
technique and special hollowing tool supplied by the instructor. The tools and the
techniques can easily be learned and adapted to the more traditional counter clockwise
lathe rotation. The second half of the first day will be used for developing the spindle
turning techniques needed to turn a long and delicate decorative icicle that will match
the top finial which covers the access holes that were used for hollowing the small globe.
The second day will be used to further expand the hollowing techniques by learning to make
rustic bird house style ornament. Upon completion of the class all participants should have several examples of each style of ornament and have a complete understanding of the techniques and tools used to produce these projects in their own studios. This is an intermediate level class. All participants should have reasonable experience with, a roughing gouge and a half-inch spindle gouge. Minimal experience with a skew chisel is also helpful but is not necessary. The tools required for the class shall include a 1 inch or larger roughing gouge, a half-inch spindle gouge and a parting tool and will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring any other tools that may help adapt their personal style. |

September 8-12th
Only 4 openings left! Cost: $695.00 plus lab and material fees Prerequisite is introduction class or some segmented turning experience What would it be like to understand wood, wood movement, grain orientation, and accurate gluin methods in a segmented turning before you spend countless hours assembling the project only to discover that the project is going to delaminate? At first glance, a segmented woodturning can be quite intimidating. This workshop, geared towards woodworkers and woodturners of all skill levels, will help you avoid the inherent pitfalls of wood you may encounter if you ignore the tendencies of wood as well as remove the intimidation of segmented wood. Throughout the week, each student working at his or her own pace, will acquire foundational skills necessary to properly construct and turn a segmented bowl. Skills will be acquired that will enable the student to look at a complex segmented pattern and break it down into smaller more understandable steps. By learning cutting, shear scraping, and turning skills as well as many time saving lamination techniques, the participant will become more proficient in the segmentation process and a more developed woodworker and woodturner. |
